The Northern Lion


The Northern Lion look pretty much like a Beijing dog which its whole body is covered with fur. Northern Lions are normally performed in pairs sometimes, they will have the little ones as well so it pairs up to 2 adult lion and 2 baby lion. There is a difference in colour between the pairs. The one with a red ribbon on its head is the male lion and the green ribbon represents the female lion. Only Northern Lions have difference in male and female, southern lion don’t.
Northern Lions perform in pairs with one person holding the ball to make the lions follow the ball as if an animal chasing after some moving object.Their dancing style very much focus on the active and playful movement.They leap on tables, chairs, and giant wooden balls, spinning 360 degree, Front flipping and rolling over one another.

The Southern Lion

Southern lion Style of dancing is very much focus on "Horse Stance". Southern Lion are separated into 2 categories too, one is the Hoksan Style and another one is the Futshan Style.
Lets review on the lion heads. Futshan Lions have a higher fore head, curved lips and also a sharp horn while Hoksan Lions also known as the duck beak lion, have a lower fore head, flat lips/duck beak mouth, and a rounded horn.
Hoksan Style of dancing adapt the movement of a cat and the way it moves is more calmer and finer. Vise-versa Futshan way of dancing is more rough and their dancing routine involves bigger movement. In the Futshan style of dancing, there is also separation in quite a number of school.
While in the other hand, Hoksan has only 2 different school, one of the most popular ones today is The Sar Ping School. Majority of Hoksan Lion Dancers Today also adapt to the Sar Ping teachings, Eg. World Champ Kun Seng Keng(Msia), Khuan Loke(Msia), Tham Pui Yuen(HK), Khuan Yee(Aus), Gee Yung(Hawaii) and many more in Indonesia, Brunei,US and round the world.
Last but not least, it was not from the traditional culture, it was only founded in the modern days. THE COMBINATION they call it the "FUTTHOCK". Combination between the looks of the Futshan Lion and the Hoksan Lion by the Singaporeans. Yes it was founded in Singapore. It has a rounded horn, a longer eye and a semi curve lips looks.
Southern Lion Perform on traditional Ground Green/Floor Green (Di Ching), High Green (gao Ching) to high risk stilts leaping also climbing on a single pole which more than 15 feet above ground level to pick a very high green.

There is another Lion called the Zhou Jia Lion Or the Jow Ga Lion in Cantonese. Jow Ga lion is traditionally from Futshan and also Hoksan. Jow long learned the Futshan style at first. He then modified the moves and lion. There are two types of Jow Ga lions one Jow Ga Hoksan and Jow Ga Futshan.
Jow Ga Hoksan lion exist, as I'd mention it was originated from the Hoksan Style, Hoksan founder Feng Geng Chang earn his name as Hoksan lion king, but many people might not know that Jow Ga Fist founder Jow Lung and Jow Biu is once, Feng Geng Chang's student. But Jow Lung and Jow Biu did not finish their learning from Feng. So, thats why Jow Ga Hoksan Lion today do Hoksan lion head but their own drumming style. Jow Ga Lion dance incoperates wushu stances and to perform well wushu background is needed.
Another style of using Hoksan Head but Futshan or their own drumming was also a branch out from Hoksan. Which its name is the "TOU PAI" Founder was Chan Tau Chong. Master Chan was a student of Jow Ga Fist. He later then went to Hong Kong to open his own school but he does not called him self the Jow Ga, But He name his School "Tou Pai"

THE GREAT HISTORY OF TODAY'S POPULAR HOKSAN LION

Hoksan lion founder Master Feng Geng Chang was got his lion dance skills from famous medication master Feng Le Xin, Master Feng Le Xing brought back Futshan Lion Dance skills from Futshan and pass it down to his village members, Master Feng Geng Chang got inspired when one day he saw a cat in him home was going after a mouse. He found that Futshan lion does not move like a real animal. So later then, Feng Geng Chang adapted the cats movement and also its 8 expression and put them into lion dance, as he also found that the looks of Futshan lion was not so pleasant to his move so he altered the mouth and its eye to look more likely to his move. Master Feng Geng Chang make cantonese lion dance became 2 of a kind and he earns him self the Hoksan Lion King.
Generations after generations, arts was passed down to master Lu Xing Yao and Master Lu makes today popular Hoksan Sarping School Master Lu Went to Singapore and passes the art down to master He Qi Cheng and follow on to todays most popular World Drum King, Master Robin Chan, Under the recomend of Master Kwok, Master H.P Siow then get Master Chan's teaching, Today Master H.P Siow have more than 20 deciple and more hundreds of student learning under the Hoksan Sarping School .
